I  saw Joan for the first time since high school and met her husband, Doug, the evening of our 40-Year Reunion. Since then, I kept in touch with Joan (and through her, Doug) via e-mail. On two business trips to L.A., I had dinner with them and observed that Joan was very happy with her life - with Doug, with her children, and very proud of her grandchildren. The last time we dined together was at a wonderful Mexican restaurant. Afterwards, Joan and Doug asked me if I had time to go with them to a high school football game. Their grandson, Jordan Wynn, quarterback, was playing in the game against his arch rival high school for the league championship. Let's see - go back to my hotel and stare at the four walls - or slip back in time to the excitement of high school football. Which to do? When we got there, the stadium was just as I remembered our Sunset/Beaverton football games. Riotous!  I watched Jordan Wynn lead his team to the league championship that night. They won decisively.  And saw the pride Joan and Doug had in him and the fine, courteous, handsome young man he was. A wonderful evening shared with my high school classmate I wish I had really gotten to know so many years ago.

Oh, the reason Joan was so excited by the Utah Utes football program? Her grandson, Jordan, is the first-string quarterback there!!!! Check out the Utes some time. That night when we watched Jordan (later made a member of the All-State football team that year) - after the rival team took delight in trying to injure Jordan and knocked him to the ground several time and after the game was over and the stands were clearing, Jordan made his way gingerly up to his Grandma Joan in the top row of the grandstand to give her a big hug and kiss!  After Joan passed away, Jordan got a tattoo - in remembrance of his Grandma.

Joan truly lived a good life, fought a good fight against cancer, and was happy at the end.

I miss her and her cheerful, newsy e-mails about family and Life!
