Laun was for many of us of the Class of '62, Mr. Sunset. He stayed a loyal Apollo for life. He was involved in all Sunset related activities and he will sincerely be missed. Laun and I first connected as more recent arrivals at Cedar Hills Elementary. He was always friendly and outgoing. Many years our paths crossed, After graduation from SHS, at the Civic Stadium in Portland when I was with the Portland Maverick Baseball organization front office doing marketing. And, again over many reunions, which incidentally he manage to recruit me to help organize using his disarming charm. To all his classmates, friends, family and loved ones we will always have many happy memories of him and wish you all the best during this difficult time.

Bill, thanks for the wonderful memories.  I did not know Laun personally, but had classes with him, and remember him as a terrific athlete, always hard working, upbeat and determined to win for Sunset.  He will be missed.

The last time I saw Laun Carlin....it was at Bend Winter Carnival in 1967ish. In a parking lot, saw a knot of guys with beer bottles going up and down on some poor guy. Went over to see who it was. At the bottom of the pile was Laun. I started tossing guys out of the way (thanks to a mouthy cousin, fighting and getting guys out of pickles was one of my lesser known activities), pulled him to his feet, said, "How are you, Launie?" Not surprisingly, he was a little fuzzy, not sure he knew who I was as we'd just been acquaintances in a few mutual school activities.  Brushed him off, checked if he was ok and wished him well, went our ways to find our separate parties. Sorry to hear of his passing; he played a large role in anchoring our alumni identity to the good ol' days. He will be missed.

Laun was warm and charming and almost always had a smile on his face.  As Bill noted, he was Mr. Sunset with his althletic prowess and spirit.  He maintained contact with several classmates over his entire life and was active in the Sunset lunches and reunions.  Though our classmate’s physical presence may be gone, their spirit lives on, forever interwoven with the fabric of our class’s history.
