During my freshman year in college, I attended Portland State for two quarters before transferring to Oregon State spring quarter. I hadn't known Mike very well in high school but that changed at PSU. We were in the same biology class and spent many long hours together at my house memorizing kingdoms, phyllums, orders, etc. Mike was a delightful guy with just enough devil in him to make me laugh A LOT! Our two quarters of biology were a great deal of fun and I always looked forward to our study times. I never talked with Mike again and I am sad that he is one of our classmates who is gone.
Mike was in my 8th grade class with Mr. Tumbleson. I will never forget the time that Mike mouthed off to Mr. Tumbleson while sitting in his desk. You know the kind. All one piece with a lid that lifted so you could put your supplies inside. Mr. Tumbleson walked over to Mike's desk and without a word put his foot on the desk and gave a mighty shove which sent Mike and desk zipping across the floor and out the door. Mike was quite wide eyed, but didn't say a word. Mr. Tubleson said something to the effect now get your work done and we'll talk of your return later. When I saw Mike at the reunion at Embassy Suites a number of years ago I told him that that memory was etched into my brain. Probably more so since I was a middle school teacher. He laughed and said he remembered it and was actually embarressed by some of the stuff that he did in school but when I saw the twinkle I called him on it and he agreed that he wasn't "too embarressed." A fun, very nice guy who I am sure is missed by many.
Mike and I spent a lot of time after school in a biology lab helping the teacher out. I was a Christain at that point and started talking with Mike about his soul and his relationship with God. He was not to enthused and kept saying that he was going to feed me to the lions. Eventually he did go to church with me and accept Jesus as Savior in his life. I lost track of Mike from that day onward. I have thought about him often.
